Hypokrit Theatre Company’s inaugural production Romeo & Juliet, directed by Arpita Mukherjee, was a reimagined telling of an old classic. This production brought the famed star crossed lovers to the world of Bollywood, with its elevated drama, song, and dance. Influenced by South Asian classical drama, folk song and dance, and themes of globalization, Hypokrit’s Romeo and Juliet harnessed the magic and elevates emotion of the Bollywood aesthetic to redefine perhaps the most well known Western Classic. With a cast of only global majority actors, director Arpita Mukherjee explored the rich conversation between east and west in a sold-out, three-week run.
