A new film written by Danny Pudi (Community, Mythic Quest), RUNNING follows Danny as he sets out to uncover the story of his estranged father.  Piecing together mementos, stories from his dad’s old friends, and hard conversations with his mother, Pudi starts on a mission to solve the puzzle of his father and finds himself instead on a complex, funny, and vulnerable journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

A unique cinematic adventure that blends theatricality and documentary filmmaking and unites theatre artists and filmmakers, RUNNING offers an emotionally intimate and visually explosive experience to audiences around the world.

This production was filmed under a SAG-AFTRA Collective Bargaining Agreement and was produced with East West Players and EnActe Arts, with major support from Stellar.

Producing Partners

East West Players (co-producer) Established in 1965, has since premiered more than 228 plays and musicals, along with over 1,000 diverse readings and workshops for actors, writers, and directors. By building bridges between East and West, we have cultivated a loyal audience of over 70% people of color. Our company continues to build platforms for artists of color while advocating for multi-faceted representations of the Asian Pacific American experience in the performing arts.

EWP was founded by nine Asian American artists (Mako, Rae Creevey, Beulah Quo, Soon-Tek Oh, James Hong, Pat Li, June Kim, Guy Lee, and Yet Lock) seeking to create roles beyond the stereotypical parts they were offered in mainstream Hollywood. In 1998, EWP Artistic Director Tim Dang led the company’s move from a 99-seat Equity Waiver “black box” theatre into a new 240-seat venue at an Actors Equity Association contract level. EWP’s main stage is the David Henry Hwang Theater, housed within the Union Center for the Arts in downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo district. The theater serves more than 25,000 people each year, and has become a creative center in this historically significant setting. When Dang retired in 2016, his successor Snehal Desai was appointed to guide East West Players into a new wave of artistic leadership. Desai has committed to steering the work of East West Players with an intersectional focus that further unveils the diversity of Asian Pacific identities as portrayed on stage.

EnActe Arts (co-producer) was founded in 2012 in response to the underrepresentation in theater of South Asians and their respective storytelling. It differentiated itself from other “South Asian” theater companies by being an American Contemporary Theater Company that embraces a diverse stakeholder group, casting beyond the South Asian community, and fostering collaboration. EnActe Arts is a talent incubator and a platform for engaging diverse populations in conversations on social issues to create greater awareness and tolerance from a South Asian perspective. Both EnActe’s performance programs and EnActe Academy are rooted in developing talent and creating opportunities for actors, playwrights, and creative and technical production staff at any skill level and of all ages and ethnicities. Participants of EnActe’s professional development experiences have gone on to paid professional positions, including joining the paid staff of theater and non-profit professionals at EnActe Arts.
